Denver says, “we occupy a world where people who are living a problem are rarely if ever heard, and when they are, it’s typically through the voice of some adult. But what about the children who have grown up in these circumstances? What does the world look like and feel like from their perspective? The organization that is bringing us the personal stories of these young people in a very creative way, so we can better understand the world around us, is BYkids. Join us at the upcoming screening and panel discussion of I COULD TELL YOU ‘BOUT MY LIFE at the Museum of the City of New York (1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street) on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 to kick off their Activist series. BYkids youth filmmaker, Michael Martin, shares his story about life on and after Rikers at age 17. The screening will be followed with a conversation: Art and incarceration, with New York-based artists Onyedika Chuke, Sophia Dawson, and Messiah Ramkissoon about the power of art – including film, painting and sculpture, and spoken word – to address the ongoing crisis of mass incarceration. Holly Carter screens MY BEAUTIFUL NICARAGUA and talks about teaching empathy and global citizenry to students as a keynote speaker at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hills’s World View conference. The 2018 K-12 Global Education Symposium is organized by Charlé LaMonica and her amazing staff and is attended by 300 teachers from North Carolina. Holly was honored to be introduced by North Carolina’s Teacher of the Year, Freebird McKinney.

Michael Martin (now 19) was incarcerated on Rikers Island and shares his experience about getting in, and out, of trouble in a short documentary he made for PBS. Mike reflects on the boredom that got him into trouble, the guidance from a counselor at Friends of Island Academy to lead him out of trouble, and his film mentor who has helped him find his voice. Tonight we celebrate Raise the Age with the world premiere of I COULD TELL YOU ‘BOUT MY LIFE — Mike Martin’s story about returning to life in Harlem after incarceration on Rikers at 17 and a panel discussion with Mike Martin (BYkids filmmaker), Holly Carter (BYkids founder and executive director), Chiemi Karasawa and Hollis Meminger (Mike’s BYkids film mentors), Tim Lisante (superintendent overseeing Rikers), Christine Pahigian (Friends of Island Academy executive director), and moderated by Johnny Perez (director of U.S. Prison Programs, National Religious Campaign Against Torture). We honor Christine Pahigian and the Honorable Bryanne Hamill, NYC Board of Corrections, Board of Children’s Rights, Commission on Civil Rights/NY Advisory Committee and retired NY Family Court Judge. We close with a performance by Messiah Ramkissoon. We experience what BYkids strives to instill in classrooms around the world – engagement, empathy and understanding.
